What a way to start Women’s History Month Councilors Crystal Smitherman (D6) and Clinton Woods (D1) spent the afternoon at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for the 2nd Annual Black Women’s Mental Health Institute, Women’s History Month Luncheon.
This year’s theme was the Beauty of Restoration, with a fireside chat moderated by Founder and CEO Nadia M. Richardson, PhD.
Mental Health Advocate April Simpkins, mother of Cheslie Kyrst (Miss USA 2019), was a special guest this year. She spoke about losing her daughter to suicide in 2022–and the importance of building awareness and support for the mental well-being of black women.
Other special guests included Miss Alabama Brianna Burrell, Tiffany Storey, and Meesha Emmett—as well as many others.
